Pole barn sizes, styles & common uses

Pole barns are sized to the job rather than picked off a fixed list. Picking the right footprint, eave height, and door layout up front avoids costly changes (or a building you outgrow) later.

Common sizes

Footprints are typically described as width × length × eave height (the height of the wall, at the roofline, before the roof pitch starts). As a general guide:

  • 24×24 – 24×36: compact garage, single shop, or backyard storage building.
  • 30×40 – 30×50: larger shop, small hobby barn, or multi-vehicle garage.
  • 40×60 – 40×80: full workshop, small ag building, or shop with an office/storage mezzanine.
  • 60×80 and up: commercial buildings, riding arenas, and larger agricultural storage.

Eave heights commonly run 10–12 feet for garages and general storage, 14–16 feet for shops that need to fit larger equipment or a vehicle lift, and 16 feet or more for arenas, RVs, or tall ag equipment. [Heritage to confirm the specific sizes/packages it offers.]

Match size to use

Sizing works best when you start from what has to fit inside, not just the footprint:

  • Personal garage/shop: vehicle or equipment dimensions plus room to walk around them, workbench space, and door swing clearance.
  • Ag/equipment storage: largest implement height and length, plus a few feet of maneuvering room at each end.
  • Horse barn or riding arena: stall count and size, aisle width, and for arenas, enough clear span and ceiling height for riding activity.
  • Shop with office or living space: the working shop area plus a separated, insulated section for office, break room, or living quarters.
  • Barndominium/residential: sized like a home floor plan first, with the post-frame shell built around those room dimensions.

A little extra footprint and height now is almost always cheaper than expanding or building a second structure later.

Doors, bays & clear span

Door type and placement affect both usability and framing. Overhead (garage-style) doors need a header sized for the opening and enough eave height to clear the door track; sliding doors need open wall space to slide across; man/walk doors are typically placed for everyday access separate from equipment doors. If the plan calls for large vehicles or equipment to move around inside, ask about a clear span design (trusses engineered to cross the full width without interior support posts) versus a design with interior posts every 10–12 feet, which costs less but breaks up the open floor space.

Options that matter

Beyond footprint and height, a few choices drive both cost and comfort: roof pitch (steeper pitches shed snow better but use more material), roofing and siding profile and color, insulation approach (none, vinyl-backed metal, batt between the girts, or spray foam), window and door count and placement, and concrete, none, a partial slab, or a full floor. Roof snow load and wind load requirements vary by region and are typically set by local code, so it’s worth confirming those with your building department, especially for wider clear-span buildings.
